When Your Accountability Partner Makes you Drink Cod Liver Oil
By JC Kiadii, Internet Marketing for Mortgage Professionals
When we were growing up, our Mother made us drink cod liver oil every single day. To those of you who have not had the pleasure of ingesting this substance, let me tell you – it is as unpleasant an experience as the term “cod liver oil” would lead you to believe. Yes, it is made from the liver of cod fish. Moreover, it smells like shrek, tastes even worse and since it is oil it slides down your throat.
Here’s more about some of the lovely characteristics of CLO from its wikipedia page:
Depending on the quality of the oil, the flavor and aroma range from a mild sardine-like flavor, to an intense odor of fish and oil. While taking the capsules as well as the liquid form, one may experience a very rancid fishy aftertaste during belching.
So, why did parents of my childhood era make their kids ingest this stuff, every single day? Because it’s good for you! In addition to rickets, cod liver oil was supposed to treat every single illness known to child. I will say we were rarely sick. Now, whether we were terrified afraid that if we were sick we would have to drink more of the stuff, I don’t know. In my Mom’s defense, she took cod liver oil every day for the rest of her life so she really believed in the stuff!
As a result of this trauma experience, I have coined the term “drinking the cod liver oil” to refer to things I really do not want to do, but are good for me. I do not mean the things I resist doing, like exercise. I mean the things that I really really really do not want to do.
Here’s where my accountability partner comes in.
Several weeks ago, she suggested I approach a particular group to market the software training courses my company offers in Atlanta and online. I immediately shot the idea down. I had approached this group several years ago and the experience was such a colossal waste of time I vowed never to do it again. This goes against my personality – for my middle name is indefatigable, but I had thrown in the towel.
She mentioned approaching this group at our next meeting. I shot it down again. She emailed me a list of web pages and contacts. Still wasn’t going to do it.
At last week’s meeting, she asked “Have you read my email about approaching such and such? Why don’t you just try it?” So, I decided to drink the cod liver oil. I promised to give it one more try this week. After visiting the links she’d provided, I found the name of a contact person. Although I haven’t been able to reach them yet, I’ll keep trying.
In the process of following through with her suggestions, however, I have stumbled across a very doable idea with the potential to add a substantial amount of revenue to my business each month. So, I have to thank D. Bass of Ask the Underwriter for making me drink the cod liver oil – it turned out to be good for me after all.
